Welcome to the Isle Of Harris.....
Northton - Isle Of Harris,
Northton is a lovely small village in the south of the isle,
Harris is from the old Norse meaning 'high land' and is often described as the 'high heart of the Hebrides'.
The Isle of Harris has a wide range of landscapes, all of which have their own charm and interest. The isle of Harris has an incredible diversity in its landscape, some might describe the isle as lunar, however I'm sure this will only be one of many thoughts, imagined, dreamt or spoken of for those who are fortunate enough to visit... this high land.
A prelude into Northton, and your journey over Harris.
Northton the village nestles in the shadow of Chaipaval which rise to a height of 365m which I'm sure will be a fine climb for me or you, or a taste of things to come for the more hardened hill walker, in addition to the hills and beach's the village itself has two further vocal points which warrant a mention to enhance your stay,
The seallam visitors centre, (Exhibition of genealogy). The centre is situated directly opposite our wee house and was founded by Bill and Chris Lawson who live next door to the centre in the old schoolhouse. The centre boasts vast genealogical resources associated with the isles and is a chance to get to know some of the factors which have had an influence on the development of the various Island communities.
Then there is the MacGillivray Centre, William MacGillivray himself was a famous naturalist and bird artist. Within the centre there are stands exhibiting only some of Williams work, for example the wildlife you are likely to see whilst strolling the loch. William was born in 1796 in Aberdeen and spent his childhood in the old village of Northton - North Town and went to school at Obbe, now called Leverburgh.
Leverburgh is only a short drive or a good walk from the village; why not try the "Anchorage" for a bite to eat or a beer or two whist you are in town.
Finally the MacGillivray Centre is an excellent viewpoint, with beautiful views across the loch and Harris hills, with Cafe, parking and toilets available before you set of on your highland way. Your fun in the hills or at the beach's of Northton starts here.
Well I hope from my short ode to Northton I have wet your appetite,,, either for the village with its quaint beauty and fresh air, or the beach's for the white sand and the crystal blue Atlantic water.
Be it the hills or the sea i'm sure you will never forget what the Hebridean Isles have to offer........The rest is up to you!!
